Cosmetic Dentistry For Crooked Teeth

Any number of things can cause our teeth to come out askew. There are a few cosmetic dentistry options that are available to fix crooked teeth.  Dr. Paul Lustiger and Dr. Alexander Hahn, from the Dental Professionals of Jersey City, NJ,

Common Causes of Crooked Teeth

There are a number of issues that can lead to crooked teeth. Some of the most common are:

  • Thumb-sucking;
  • Excessive pacifier and/or straw use;
  • Poor diet/hygiene;
  • Accidents; and/or
  • Genetics.

Problems Crooked Teeth Can Cause

Crooked teeth are not just a result, but can create problems of their own. Our mouths are intended to be designed so that our teeth fit perfectly against each other. Misalignments can force unnatural wear on already damaged teeth as well as cause jaw problems. Speech may be impacted. It is possible for this to also cause anxiety and depression. The longer they remain untreated, the more damage can be done.

Fortunately, there are solutions.

How Cosmetic Dentistry Can Help

Depending on the type of issue that led to the crooked teeth, there are different ways to remedy them.

  • Typical Misalignment. There are a few ways to address teeth that naturally grow crooked. Traditional braces are the most common, though there are now clear retainers and ceramic braces that function the same while being more discrete.
  • Crowns and Veneers. Broken or misshapen teeth can be repaired by using porcelain to cover the original tooth.
  • Surgery. Minor misalignments may be able to be fixed with oral sedation surgery.

By fixing crooked teeth, common actions such as speaking and eating will require much less effort and focus. This will reduce the tension of the jaw and mouth, reducing ailments (headaches and neck aches) related to them. Self-esteem also improves with a new smile.
