Five Ways to Brighten Your Smile

A bright, white smile is one of the most common goals our dentists help patients achieve. There are five steps everyone can take to obtain whiter teeth using a mix of at-home solutions and in-practice treatments.

Improve Your Oral Hygiene

Stains can occur on the inside and outside of a tooth. Internal staining is often a result of tooth decay, and external staining is caused by food, drink, and tobacco particles stuck to the enamel. Neglecting to brush or floss makes it easier for advanced decay and discoloration to build up on your teeth.

The best way to prevent internal discoloration and alleviate external stains is to make sure you are brushing and flossing properly. The bristles of the toothbrush should make contact with the teeth at a 45 degree angle to best remove plaque and debris from the enamel. Any remaining buildup has to be removed by flossing twice a day.

Change Your Diet

Coffee, soft drinks, tomato-based sauces, wine, and curry are just some of the pigmented foods that darken your teeth over time, especially if you consume these regularly.

To slow down the pace at which these foods and drinks cause stains, you should change your diet to eat and drink less of these. This does not mean you must give these up entirely. Instead, enjoy them in moderation.

Eliminate Bad Habits

Even if you change your diet and start to brush correctly, all of that work to brighten your smile can be undone if you continue to smoke or consume other tobacco products. Frankly, the larger issue is the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other health problems that arise as a result of using tobacco. For the sake of both your health and the shade of your teeth, quit smoking.

Get Your Oral Health in Order

Undergoing general or restorative dental care could help you achieve the bright smile you want. As an example, internal tooth staining caused by decay can be eliminated with root canal therapy and the overall tooth structure repaired with a porcelain crown. Be sure to talk to your dentist about how your current oral health is playing a part in your smile’s appearance and see what health-first treatments can be done to give you whiter teeth.
